How to exercise my 7 week old puppy without compromising his health before his vaccinations are complete?

By Puppyman • May 29, 2009 • Filed in: Puppy Health and Veterinary

I live in a tiny unit in a city as good as only got a 7 week aged retriever/blue heeler mix. He is really intelligent as good as enterprising as good as is you do good with his puppy desk desk pad training. His oldster is really aged propagandize as good as told me which we could begin bringing him out side during 8 weeks. we keep celebration of a mass things in books as good as online about not bringing a puppy out prior to all vaccinations have been finish during sixteen weeks. we called an additional hospital currently to get a an additional perspective as good as they told me which he should not be brought out until sixteen weeks given he could stipulate rabies from a excrement of a wild animal. There seems to be mixed schools of thought. The emanate is not so most a desk desk pad training, yet we would patently similar to to get him residence damaged asap, though rsther than which he is an enterprising small man as good as will in a future grow to be an enterprising bigger guy. we wish to be means to run/walk with him as good as get him as most practice as probable to safeguard which he is happy, full of illness as good as good balanced, though during a same time, we don't wish to risk his illness as good as presumably his life, given we've sorta grown a small trustworthy to a small guy. Does any one have any thoughts per what age he should be authorised out or recommendations about pick forms of exercise? THANKS!

Your pup is VERY young and in most cases should still be with his mother.

And, your pup should not be taken anywhere until he's had his full series of vaccinations. If you lived in a house, your own backyard would be as far as he should go until he's older, but since you live in an apartment, keep him in!

Once he's finished the vaccination series, you can start taking him out. But I wouldn't worry about an exercise program at this young age. A little play time with you and then a good nap is Puppy Protocol!

At around 3 months or so (provided he has all vaccinations), you can start him with some leash training and should consider taking him to some basic obedience puppy classes.

Just take it slow. You'll know when he's ready for more exercise as he grown.

You can definitely bring him outside and start house breaking him right now. The main thing to worry about is parvo, but he should already be vaccinated for that. Keep him on a leash and out of dog parks and pet stores until he has had his rabies shot at 12 weeks, but walking on a leash is fine.

roll a ball across the kitchen floor. a 7 week old pup doesn't need huge amounts of exercise, just enough to tire him.

as he gets bigger, train him that inside is for relaxing, and outside is for playing.

As an obedience teacher, I will tell you to get him out and about, just do it in areas that aren't as highly trafficked by other dogs (no dog parks, Petco's, etc.).

Puppies *need* socialization. It is well proven that there are windows of opportunity for socialization. Puppies that are exposed to lots of different environments, people, sounds, smells, etc. can handle those things later in life. A puppy that is quarantined misses those experiences and that window of opportunity.

Your pup did leave mom and siblings a little early (8 weeks is better), so has already missed out on learning some valuable social skills. Make sure to find a puppy kindergarten class and get him signed up. You can start that for another couple weeks, but get on top of finding a class now.

See if you can find other healthy puppies or stable tempered dogs for playmates.

Lots of early – positive – socialization and training make for a well adjusted adult dog.

You start training from day one. Get him used to the leash now. Start working on sits and downs. Just keep training sessions SHORT and FUN.

Don't teach him to potty on potty pads inside, unless you plan to always have him do that. It's not a good idea to teach a dog that it's OK to potty inside. Here is a good article on crate/potty training – http://www.doglogic.com/cratetrain.htm .

Just to start, nobody contracts rabies from rabid dog poop. Nobody. It's not how the disease is transmitted.

That being said, he CAN contract parvovirus from the excrement of a dog with the disease, and the virus can survive in the soil for months after the poop's washed away. Parvovirus will kill a pup, no questions, so please do as the people here have suggested and keep your pup away from areas that a lot of other dogs play.

You should be just fine playing in relatively dog-free areas though. So take your pup out and enjoy play time!
